    • FACS Convocation was held on December 12th at the Georgia Center. View the official program here. Dietetics students Ellie Getchell and Lily Grant served as Marshals, and the Student Perspective Address was delivered by Chloe Mullis. Department Head, Connie Rogers, was a member of the platform party, and Art Grider was the Reader. Dr. Grider was also a member of the faculty processional at the Undergraduate Commencement ceremony held on December 13th at Stegman Coliseum, and Emma Laing served as the FACS Faculty Marshal.     • To celebrate the end of the fall semester, our DI students enjoyed a trip to Condor Chocolates + a visit to Avid Bookshop. Students in MNT-1 were treated to a tour of the Jittery Joe’s Roaster + dinner catered by Maepole. These out-of-class social events led by Drs. Lauren Housley and Emma Laing, respectively, were supported by the UGA Student Affairs student/faculty enrichment fund. Photos of the events were shared on the NUTR Facebook and Instagram pages.

    • The Fifth Annual Obesity Initiative Research Symposium will take place on February 11th, 2025 at the Special Collections Library. Please visit this website for more information about registration, abstract submission (for graduate students), itinerary, and keynote speaker. Please also share this call for abstracts announcement with your graduate students and colleagues. The deadline for submission is January 10, 2025.

    • Caree Cotwright delivered the keynote address at the Nutrition Security, MyPlate, and Children’s Health event in October hosted by the USDA, Children’s Hospital Association, and Lurie Children’s Hospital of Chicago. The event brought together experts from leading children’s hospitals to discuss innovative approaches to nutrition security and children’s health.

The PhD and MS Thesis students in Dr. Emily Noble's NUTR 8900 course will be presenting posters. You are invited to come ask questions and show your support for them! Lunch will follow in room 306.
    • The next SDA meeting will be held on November 20th at 5:30 pm in Room 101 Dawson Hall. This meeting will include a Holiday Social and Senior Panel. 
    • Students in Emma Laing’s MNT-1 class participated in a liquid nutrition tasting lab this semester where they gained an appreciation for the wide variety of therapeutic supplements RDNs use when treating patients. Photos from the lab were shared on the NUTR Facebook and Instagram pages.

    • There is no seminar speaker scheduled for tomorrow, 11/13. However, Nutritional Sciences graduate students are still expected to meet at 11:30am in Dawson Hall room 306 for a meeting with Dr. Anderson. This will be a check-in meeting with reminders, upcoming deadlines, and other important information. The NUTR GSO will not be serving lunch tomorrow, so please plan accordingly.
    • In collaboration with the UGA Dietetic Internship and Peer Nutrition Educator programs, dietetics major Ayla Dasher will be hosting a mindful eating event followed by cookie decorating. The event will take place on November 21st at 6pm in Dawson Hall. 
    • The SDA Supervised Practice Forum held on 11/6 was a tremendous success! Programs in attendance included Auburn University, Augusta University, Emory University Hospital, Meredith College, Morrison Healthcare, Tennessee Tech University, University of Georgia MS/DI and PhD/DI, Wellness Workdays, and WIC (GA Department of Health).     • Current dietetic interns Mary Lazzaro and Claire Hawkins met up with alumni Alyssa Guadagni and Catherine Prater while presenting their research at the ObesityWeek Conference last week in San Antonio! Photos were shared on the NUTR Facebook and Instagram pages.

Auburn University, Augusta University, Emory University Hospital, Meredith College, Morrison Healthcare, Tennessee Tech University, University of Georgia MS/DI and PhD/DI, Wellness Workdays, and WIC (GA Department of Health) will be represented. 
    • The UGA Peer Nutrition Educators led by Katherine Ingerson participated in the Athens YMCA Trunk or Treat event on 10/24 and YQuest on 10/29. This collaboration between our dietetics programs and the YMCA is made possible by receipt of the 2024 Bobbi Meeler Sahm Service and Outreach Award.     • PhD candidate Wang Shin (Ann) Lei will be defending her dissertation next Monday, November 11th, 2024, in Dawson Hall Rm. 306 at 1:00 PM. Her dissertation is entitled, "The Gut-Bone Axis: Effects of Incretin Hormones on Bone Metabolism."

    • Several NUTR students, staff, and faculty members attended the inaugural FACS Family Road Trip on September 24th at South Main Brewing at Wire Park in Watkinsville. Drs.     • This month’s ASD Faculty Forum is being hosted by the DRC’s Autism Group! The meeting will be held over zoom on Wednesday, September 25th at 4:30pm, and it will consist of student speakers and an open Q&A. This meeting will give attendees the opportunity to hear from autistic voices about how autism impacts the college experience and will open discussions about accommodations. This is open to all faculty members across all colleges at UGA.     • The Office of Service-Learning is seeking volunteers to support the new: 'Coaching 4 Success' after-school sports and academic coaching program. This program offers UGA students the opportunity to make a meaningful impact by serving as sports and academic coaches for 4th and 5th graders at local elementary schools. As a volunteer, you will have the chance to mentor young students, help them improve their academic skills, and engage them in fun physical activities. This is a great way to gain hands-on experience and give back to the community. To get started, we are hosting training sessions for those interested in volunteering for this program. If so, UGA's Three-Minute Thesis (3MT®) competition is a great place to challenge your communication skills to non-technical audiences. Convened jointly by the U.S. Departments of Health and Human Services (HHS) and Agriculture (USDA), the Committee will hear updates from each subcommittee and discuss progress made since Meeting 5. Topics will include evidence review and synthesis, draft conclusion statements, and plans to finalize the Committee’s work, including its Scientific Report. This celebration was established in 2002 and is dedicated to recognizing the art and science of cooking and the contributions of chefs and culinary professionals to the food industry.     • UGA Well-being is collaborating with SNAP-ED Cooperative Extension to foster a culture of hydration in our UGA and Georgia-wide community.     • The Georgia Dietetic Foundation (GDF) is announcing the scholarship application process for 2024. The deadline is June 30, 2024. This year, the GDF will award one or more scholarships to students enrolled in ACEND-accredited dietetics programs (DPD, DI) in Georgia.     • The Fourth Annual Nutrition Diversity Conference will be held virtually on September 6, 2024, and welcomes students, faculty, and staff to register. This conference is sponsored by Metropolitan State University of Denver’s Post-baccalaureate Opportunities for Hispanic Americans (POHA-Denver) grant within the Department of Nutrition. The POHA-Denver Nutrition Diversity Conference provides a day filled with presentations, cooking demonstrations, and an interactive workshop on nutritional care. Educational sessions will include managing care for specific cultures and individuals while providing tips for students to be successful in our field. Professionals can earn up to 24 CEUs, with 7 CEUs counting towards ethics by attending a full day of sessions.
